What time is orangutan feeding at Sepilok?
Twice a day, at 10:00 and 15:00, on the outdoor feeding platform. The gates open 09:00–12:00 and 14:00–16:00 (Fridays 09:00–11:00 and 14:00–16:00), so arrive 30 to 45 minutes before feeding to get a place at the front, and leave bags in the RM1 lockers. The outdoor nursery, where younger orangutans practise climbing, is open within those hours and is often the better view.
How much is the Sepilok Orangutan Centre ticket?
Orangutan Centre: RM30 adult and RM15 child for non-Malaysians, RM5 and RM2 for Malaysians, plus RM10 per camera (phones included); the ticket is valid all day so you can attend both feedings. Sun Bear Centre: RM50 adult and RM25 child (2–17) for non-Malaysians, RM10 and RM5 for Malaysians. Rainforest Discovery Centre: RM30 adult and RM20 child (5–17) for non-Malaysians, RM7 and RM3 for Malaysians; the RDC night walk is a separate RM30 per person, booked at the counter before 17:00. The Orangutan Centre and RDC are cash only (the Sun Bear Centre takes cards and e-wallets), and the nearest ATM is in Sandakan, so bring ringgit. All our tours include the fees.
How many days do you need in Sepilok?
One full day covers the Orangutan Centre, the Sun Bear Centre and the RDC canopy walk. Stay one night and you add the RDC night walk and a quieter morning feeding. Most visitors then go on to two nights on the Kinabatangan River, which is the 3D2N package above.
How do I get to Sepilok from Sandakan Airport?
It's 11 km, about 20 minutes. Taxis and Grab are at arrivals, and every Sepilok resort will arrange a transfer if you ask at booking. If you're on a tour, pick-up is included.
Sepilok or Semenggoh — which is better?
They are different experiences. Semenggoh, near Kuching in Sarawak, is quieter and feels wilder; sightings depend on free-roaming orangutans choosing to come in, which they often don't in fruiting season. Sepilok is busier, especially at the 10:00 feeding, but has the outdoor nursery where you will almost always see young orangutans, plus the Sun Bear Centre and RDC next door. Some visitors who've done both prefer Semenggoh's atmosphere. If you're continuing to the Kinabatangan, Sepilok is the practical choice; if you want to avoid crowds here, come for the 15:00 feeding or stay overnight and arrive at opening.
Will I definitely see orangutans at Sepilok?
Usually, but not guaranteed. The orangutans are free to roam the reserve and are fed a deliberately boring diet so they learn to forage; when the forest is fruiting, fewer come to the platform. The Sabah Wildlife Department says this openly. The outdoor nursery viewing area (one air-conditioned room, one with fans) is the safer bet, and the Sun Bear Centre opposite rarely disappoints.
Getting back to Sandakan: any catches?
The Orangutan Centre clears visitors out promptly by 16:00, and Grab drivers sometimes decline pick-ups at the gate so that waiting taxis can charge more. Book your return in advance, ask your resort to arrange it, or share a GrabXL with other visitors. If you're on one of our tours, transport is included.
Can I visit Sepilok without a tour?
Yes. Sepilok is easy to do independently if you're staying in the reserve: the three centres are walkable from the resorts. A tour earns its keep when you're combining Sepilok with Labuk Bay, Gomantong or the Kinabatangan, or when you're on a tight flight schedule from Kota Kinabalu.
