Best time to visit Sepilok

Sepilok is equatorial: hot, humid, and capable of an afternoon shower in any month. The real seasonal question isn't whether the orangutans will be there — feedings run daily, all year — but how wet the trails are, how full the viewing deck is, and whether the boat to Turtle Islands runs smooth. Month by month, here's how it actually plays.
The two seasons, roughly
March–October (drier): better underfoot on the trails and the Kabili walk, clearer canopy views, calm seas for Selingan, peak birding March–May. The paradox: good fruiting years mean some orangutans skip the platform — the forest is feeding them, which is the centre's whole mission (see how the wildlife odds shift by season). November–February (northeast monsoon): heavier and more frequent rain, mostly in afternoon bursts; fewer visitors, softer room rates, and leaner forest fruit that pushes more orangutans to the feedings. The Sulu Sea crossing to Turtle Islands is the one thing genuinely degraded — it gets rough and occasionally cancels.

Booking lead times
Sepilok's entire bed stock is a few hundred; it books out before Sandakan does. Rules of thumb: Jul–Aug and mid-Dec–early Jan, book rooms and Selingan four to six weeks ahead; Selingan in any month, two to three weeks (the island cap, not demand, is the constraint); everything else, days to a week is usually fine. Tours inherit the same constraints — the earlier the form, the more choices survive.
Time of day beats time of year
Whatever the month, the daily rhythm matters more: 09:00 at the orangutan gate before the vans, sun bears before 11:30, canopy at 08:00 or 16:00, night walk at 18:00, and the afternoon shower spent over lunch or a siesta like everyone sensible in Sabah.
