How to get to Sepilok

From Sandakan Airport (SDK) — 11 km, 20 minutes

The closest airport to any major wildlife site in Borneo. Taxis at the arrivals counter charge about RM45 per car to Sepilok; Grab usually works from the terminal. From Sandakan town — 25 km, 30–45 minutes

Grab or taxi runs RM40–50 one way. The budget route is the bus marked "Batu 14 Sepilok" from the minibus terminal near the Navy base: RM6, about 45 minutes, and it stops right at the centres' gate. Out: 09:00, 11:30, 14:00, 17:00. Back: 06:30, 10:30, 12:30, 16:00. The catch: the 09:00 bus is the only one that makes the 10:00 feeding, and the 16:00 return is the last, leaving as the orangutan centre closes. From Kota Kinabalu — fly 45 minutes, or drive/bus 6+ hours

Fly: Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia run several daily KK–Sandakan rotations from about 45 minutes; cheap if booked ahead, then 20 minutes by road to Sepilok. Bus: express coaches from KK's Inanam terminal take six to seven hours over the Crocker Range and past Kinabalu Park, around RM45–50; ask the driver for the Sepilok junction, then walk or ride the last 2.5 km. From the Kinabatangan (Sukau / Bilit) — 2 to 2.5 hours

Most river lodges include or sell Sepilok transfers; a shared car to Sukau runs about RM50 per person. Gomantong Caves sits just off the route, so a stop costs little extra time. Coming the other way, every Sepilok & Kinabatangan package has this leg built in.

From Semporna or Tawau

Tung Ma and other express buses run Semporna–Sandakan in about five hours; get off at the Sepilok junction. Divers coming off Sipadan trips usually fly Tawau–Sandakan via KK or take the bus.

Getting away again: the gate problem

At 16:00 the orangutan centre empties, the last bus leaves, and Grab drivers sometimes decline gate pick-ups while the waiting taxis quote tourist rates. Fix it in advance: book a return with your resort, keep your driver's WhatsApp, or arrange the day as a tour with the vehicle standing by. This single detail causes more bad afternoons than anything else in Sepilok.
