Where to stay in Sepilok

Everything sleeps on one road into the reserve, so choosing is really three questions: how close to which gate, pool or no pool, and budget. Here are all six options compared honestly — we take no commission from any of them — plus the case for a Sandakan city base, which is real but usually loses.

How to choose in one paragraph
Mornings at the orangutan gate → Nature Resort or Jungle Resort. Kids → Jungle Resort for the pool and room range (see travelling with kids — family rooms and the age guide). Dawn birding and the night walk → the B&B/Tanini pair by the RDC. Comfort after a river lodge → Borneo Sepilok Rainforest Resort. Budget with soul → Paganakan Dii. Quiet dinner on a deck → Forest Edge. Whatever you pick, book well ahead for July, August and December; Sepilok's total bed count is small. The Sandakan alternative
City hotels are cheaper per star and put you next to the waterfront seafood and the heritage sights — a fair trade for one night either side of flights. For the wildlife days themselves it costs you the two best hours: the 09:00 gate before the vans arrive, and the 18:00 night walk without a dark drive back. Our standing advice: city for the arrival night if flights demand it, Sepilok for every night the orangutans are the plan.
Eating in Sepilok
Resort kitchens are the restaurants; the trio worth knowing are The Lake Bistro & Bar, The Nest at Forest Edge, and Banana Café at Jungle Resort. Kitchens close 19:00–20:00, there's no delivery, and the nearest alternative dining is Sandakan — plan dinner like it's 1995 and you'll be fine.
