Kota Kinabalu to Sepilok

KK and Sepilok sit on opposite coasts of Sabah with the Crocker Range between them. Flying is fast and usually cheap; the road is long but crosses some of the best scenery in Borneo. Here's the honest comparison, plus the overnight-bus trick that saves a hotel night.
The three options

Flying
Several rotations daily; the first departures land in Sandakan around 08:00–09:00, which is what makes a same-morning feeding possible. Sandakan Airport is 11 km from Sepilok — see airport to Sepilok. Book ahead and the fare often undercuts a night's accommodation, which reframes the bus saving. The bus
Express coaches leave KK's Inanam terminal through the day and evening, cross the Crocker Range past Kinabalu Park (sit left for the mountain), stop in Ranau or Telupid, and reach the east in six to seven hours. Ask the driver for the Sepilok junction (Batu 14) — you'll be dropped on the highway 2.5 km from the centres; walk it, or a resort will collect you for a small fee. The overnight bus arrives around dawn, in time to drop bags and make the 10:00 feeding, which is the backpacker classic. Book a day ahead in holiday periods.
Self-drive
One road, well surfaced, six to seven hours with a Kundasang or Ranau lunch stop. It makes sense if you're touring — Kinabalu Park on the way out, Sepilok, then onward to Lahad Datu — and less sense for a straight return. Fuel plus rental usually beats two air fares for a family with time; petrol stations are regular, and the Sepilok resorts all have parking.
