Things to do in Sepilok

Essential — the reason you're here

1. The orangutan feedings (Orangutan Centre, 10:00 & 15:00, 2–3 h). The headline act, and the nursery often outdoes the platform. Go at gate-opening or take the quieter 15:00.

2. The RDC night walk (RDC, 18:00–20:00, RM30). The sleeper hit: flying squirrels launching at dusk, civets, scorpions under UV, a slow loris on a good night. Book by 17:00; requires staying in Sepilok, which is half the argument for staying in Sepilok.

3. The Sun Bear Centre (BSBCC, 1–1.5 h, best 09:00–11:30). Nobody comes for the sun bears; everybody leaves talking about them.

Excellent — build the day around them

4. The canopy walkway at dawn or dusk (RDC, 08:00 or 16:00–18:00). Hornbills at eye level, the Sepilok Giant, and towers over the treetops. Midday it's just a hot walkway — timing is everything.

5. Labuk Bay (45 min away, half day). Guaranteed close-range proboscis monkeys. Essential if you're skipping the river; skippable if you're not.

6. The Kinabatangan (2 nights). Technically beyond Sepilok, practically its second act — the wild version of everything the centres rehabilitate. Full guide: the Kinabatangan River: a complete guide.

Situational — brilliant for the right person

7. Gomantong Caves (en route to the river, 1–2 h + exodus). Astonishing and pungent in equal measure; the 17:30 bat exodus is the payoff. Not for the cockroach-averse. Full guide: Gomantong Caves: birds' nests, bats and the boardwalk.

9. The Kabili Trail (reserve, full day, permit). The serious jungle walk, 20 km return with leeches and silence. For fit walkers who want the forest without a vehicle in earshot.

10. Birding (everywhere, dawn). 300+ species and the Bornean bristlehead; the RDC towers are the stakeout. Specialist guides bookable — say so in the form.

11. Sandakan's history (the city, half day). Memorial Park, Agnes Keith House, the heritage trail — the sobering, worthwhile counterweight to the wildlife.

What Sepilok doesn't have

Nightlife beyond the frog chorus, shopping beyond gift counters, beaches (Selingan excepted), and dinner after 20:00. That's the deal, and the people who love Sepilok love it for exactly this shape: dawn starts, animal hours, early nights, repeat.
